(OCD) OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER OCD's are generally comprised of 2 components: obsessions and compulsions Obsessions are persistent involuntary thoughts, images or impulses, which are experienced as unpleasant and anxiety provoking. Compulsions are overt repetitive behaviours (e.g. hand washing, checking, counting) or covert cognitive rituals (e.g. repeating the number 13, thirteen times). Approximately 25% of OCD sufferers experience obsessional thoughts without overt compulsions. People who suffer with OCD's will be caught in a vicious circle of: OBSESSIVE THOUGHTS which leads to ANXIETY which will lead onto RITUALS - TO RELIEVE THE ANXIETY. These thoughts may feel intrusive. Although these thoughts may be recognised as one’s own thoughts, OCD sufferers may feel resistance to them, or may even feel like they don't have a choice. The rituals may feel like a protection from a dreaded event, or the sufferer may have initial relief after the completion of the thought or act. The most common type of OCD sufferer may find that they are easily upset by change, feel they need to be in control, have an excessive or perfectionist personality type, indecisive, or sensitive to criticism. Generally, compulsions will be based on obsessional thoughts, they may be overt, repetitive behaviours which are not necessarily purposeful and may not necessarily be completed at any time. The types of predisposing factors to OCD's could be stressful events, dramatic or traumatic events, emotional issues, concealment's and family challenges. The age of the OCD onset will be a factor and may often be in adolescence and early childhood.
