ADDICTION The term "addiction" is used in many contexts to describe an obsession, compulsion, or excessive psychological dependence. Addiction is not having control over doing, taking or using something, to the point where it may even be harmful. Common addictions are to alcohol or drugs, but it is possible to become addicted to anything, from gambling to chocolate. Whatever the addiction may be, you cannot control how you use it, and you become dependent on it to get through daily life. Whatever the compulsive condition, it is designed to make the individual feel better about themselves and their lives whilst ignoring the uncomfortable reality of their normal everyday existence. Withdrawal from your addiction may become less pleasant than having it. Common addictions are shopping, caffeine, chocolate, computers, drugs, exercise, food, gambling, illegal drugs, pornography, sex, self harm, social, stopping eating, sugar. For many people suffering from an addiction, the cause is never known, though it is important to discover the root of the problem hence the cause before an effective plan of care is prepared.
