PHOBIAS

The dictionary definition of a phobia is, an extreme reaction to fear triggered by a stimulus. In therapeutic terms it can be referred to as, a fear of a fear, the idea of being anxious in anticipation.

A fear can be a rational or legitimate concern, a survival instinct which warns us that we are in the presence of real danger. However many phobias become irrational, when we become overly concerned about something that does not present a real danger to us. Phobias have their roots in our unconscious minds and can be described as learned responses or learned behaviours. The reason they are described as learned is because no one is born with a phobia – they develop over time as a result of either modeling someone else’s response to a particular stimuli or, as a result of a one off specific event that has stayed with us. Phobias can be referred to as a simple phobia (fears about specific objects, animals, situations, or activities and the response is immediate, like seeing a spider or going to the dentist - these generally begin in early childhood and may disappear or lesson in adulthood), or a process/complex phobia ( which tends to be more disabling than simple phobias because they are often associated with a deep-rooted fear, or anxiety, about a particular circumstance or situation, two common examples of complex phobias are agoraphobia and social phobias - these often start in later life). Approximately 1 in 9 people live with a phobia of some sort and many people live their lives with minimal effect. If however, you are experiencing 4 of more attacks in a 4 week period, avoiding situations, providing irrational excuses, becoming unreasonable, or your situation is becoming disabling in anyway, you are living your life with maximum effect and will be extremely debilitating for you and those around you. Phobias can affect anyone, regardless of age, sex, and social background.
